One of the best-known tourist attractions in Melaka, the 16th-century A Famosa fortress towers above Melaka and is located just 5 minutes by car from Bayview Hotel Melaka. Built by the Portuguese in the 1500s, it is one of the oldest examples of European presence in Asia. The original Porta de Santiago gate remains, along with portions of the ancient gatehouse and a period-specific cannon in front.
